The 12 Days of Christmas – Day 1 – The Christmas Book Trolley!

We are thrilled to announce the first of our donations for our ’12 Days of Christmas’ feature!

After our Christmas Book Appeal sold out in a record 6 days this year, we were delighted to deliver the full trolley to the Special Care Baby Unit at the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle. The trolley is absolutely packed with books, each of which has the name of the person who bought it written in the front.

The staff of the ward were thrilled with the new library and told us how much of a difference it will make to the families who spend time on the ward with their little ones. The staff had been keen to get more books on to the ward for a while, given the proven benefits of reading to babies, but now they don’t need to worry – they have a full library all of their own!

Research has proven that reading to a poorly or premature baby has a HUGE impact. Hearing a parents voice relives stress for the baby, even if they are so poorly they are unconscious… it also relieves stress for the parents, as they are able to do something ‘normal’ during the very stressful time of having a child in hospital. The therapeutic benefits of being read to help the child recover quicker, and it also encourages other family members such as a sibling or grandparents, to get involved in caring for the baby.

In short, this library will make a huge difference to babies and their families on the ward in Carlisle. On behalf of all the families, the staff, and us at Team Evie, thank you so much to everyone who donated this Christmas!
